We all have something that God has called us to do, but many of us don’t do it because of discouraging circumstances or what we perceive to be a lack of ability or resources. This is me. I have heard God tell me three separate times the past year, “I don’t need your money.” Each time, I have tried to figure out what that means. Aggravated, I have asked God, “What do you mean? What are you talking about? Of course, you don’t, but I don’t know what else to do?” I think to myself, ‘God might not need my money, but I need my money!’. Side thought: I think it is weird people spend most of their life working hard to make printed green paper– supposedly back by a yellow rock– or digital digits in some computer– supposedly back by the green paper that is backed by the yellow rock. However, it is what people, unfortunately, need for living and most everything that needs to be done in life. Too often, many of us, often put aside our gifts; talents; and calling from God aside, due to what we believe to be our ‘lack of ability or lack of resources’.
Moses tried to do that. He focused on his lack of ability and his lack of resources to argue with God that he was not the right man for the job that God had called him. “Please send someone else! I’m not a good speaker! Who am I? What if they don’t believe me?” Those are just to name a few of the Moses questions to God, but God answered in Exodus 3 & 4. To one of the questions God asked Moses:
“What is that in your hand?” – Exodus 4:2
God asked Moses what was in his hand? The all-knowing God already knew what was in Moses’ hand. So the question God asked Moses here was not for God’s sake, but for Moses’ sake and for our sake. Moses was a shepherd and shepherds carried a staff! God already knew it was a staff! The question was so Moses could recognize the very little he had to bring could be used by God in abundance. It was so Moses could see it was not about what he had, but WHO God Is.
“A staff.” Moses replied. – Exodus 4:2
Say it now. What is it that you have to start doing what God has called you to do? It might not look like much right now, but say it out loud for your sake. You know what it is! Moses had a staff and God used Moses and his staff multiple times throughout Exodus. You may already know the rest of this story, and I would encourage you to read it in Exodus 3 & 4. God uses Moses, a man who pretty much didn’t have much going for him in his abilities; his resources; or his confidence. Moses asked many of the questions which we may have had, or currently have in our own lives in order to make excuses as to why we could not or cannot do something. However, this is what Moses did do– He obeyed God’s calling! He trusted that God could and would use even the little he had to offer–It was a stick!– and God used it in an amazing way!
Just like God told me, ‘I don’t need your money.’— God doesn’t need your abilities. God doesn’t need your resources. God needs you to be obedient to the calling He has placed on your life! I don’t know what yours may be, but God is calling you to do something. What is it that is too big for you right now? What is in your way? What is it that you perceive is just impossible? What is your fear?– Answer this: What is in your hand?
“For nothing is impossible with God.” – Luke 1:37
Nothing is impossible with God. Nothing is too big for God. If God is for us, then what can stand against us! I’m tired of seeing myself passive in pursuing the dreams and calling God has given me, and tired of seeing my friends and family and many other Christians passive in the dreams and calling God has given them. It’s time we start putting our confidence back in God and His unlimited resources rather than our own. What is in your hand? What is in your hand? What is in your hand? God can use even that!
